O Faro e a Lúa for mixed choir, with lyric by Yolanda Castaño and music by Juan Pérez Berná, is inspired by a painting by Urbano Lugrís. The poetry of Yolanda Castaño and the music of Juan Pérez Berná recreate the nocturnal dreamlike atmosphere of the pictorial vision of Lugrís.
The Lighthouse of A Coruña, the Tower of Hercules, wants to reach its beloved Moon with its light. Its sparkles are reflected on the surface of the sea, and the Atlantic, jealous, throws its waves with force to reach the blue kiss in which the two luminous lovers merge each night. But his efforts are unsuccessful and, resigned, he assists the romance of the Lighthouse and the Moon.
This idea is developed musically in O Faro e a Lúa, through an ABCA“ reexpositive structure. The first section (Brumoso) is elaborated contrapuntistically from the theme constructed in Aeolian mode that initially expose sopranos and altos. This theme and its evolutions suggest musically the reflection of the lights of the lighthouse and of the moon on the surface of the sea; as a counterpoint the astonishment of the ocean is recreated for tenor and bass.
The second section (Furioso) is elaborated from the cadential material of the first and represents the anger of the sea. The third section (Misterioso) offers two themes; one musically plasma the design of the waves that, furious, the ocean throws to reach the embrace of the lovers; the other emerges serenely in the night and rises towards the night sky representing the serene solidity of the union of Faro and Luna; this section concludes with a painful climax, expression of the inability of the ocean to achieve its purpose.
The beginning of the fourth section (Brumoso) reexposes the material of the first, to which the second topic of the third section is added; both themes merge into the coda and the composition ends on an unstable chord of fourths over the tonic of the eolian mode, expression of the eternal return of the loves of Faro (Lighthouse) and Luna (the Moon).

Arrangement : Voices and orchestra
Editorial : Dos Acordes, 2009
Comments : Miguel Hernández wrote “Villancico Extrafino” just before starting his stage works, but it remained unpublished until its publication in the second volume of the complete works of this author. The four poems that make up this short cycle are introduced with scenic dimensions, more symbolic than real, and each one of them recreates a scene from the Christmas cycle. The orchestration of “Villancico Extrafino” obeys cumulative guidelines that allow it to be performed by four different formations:
choir, vocal soloists and orchestra,
choir, soloists, cello and piano,
mezzo-soprano and orchestra (eliminating the first movement),
mezzo-soprano, cello and piano (eliminating the first movement).
The two versions without a chorus can be performed under the title “Three Extra Fine Christmas Carols“. The parts that allow the performance of both the orchestral and chamber versions are contained on the CD that accompanies this paper edition.
